11 U.S. regions facing the highest natural-disaster risk

Natural-disaster risk in the United States is not spread evenly. A handful of places sit where geology, weather patterns, and dense development overlap, so a single event can reach millions of people at once. The eleven regions below carry some of the highest standing hazard exposure in the country.

1. The Cascadia Coast: Overdue for a Magnitude-9 Rupture

The Cascadia Subduction Zone runs roughly 700 miles offshore from northern California to British Columbia, and federal earthquake hazard research shows it has produced magnitude-9 ruptures roughly every few hundred years. The last one struck in 1700. Coastal communities in Oregon and Washington sit within minutes of a tsunami wave should another rupture occur.

No agency can predict when. What scientists can say is that low-lying towns along the shoreline have little warning time, which is why evacuation routes and vertical shelters have become the region’s main defense.

2. Southern California: The San Andreas Is Locked and Loaded

Roughly 24 million people live within reach of the southern San Andreas fault, a stretch that has not produced a major rupture since about 1857. Geologists tracking fault behavior through U.S. Geological Survey monitoring describe strain accumulating along the segment year after year. Freeways, aqueducts, and gas lines all cross the fault trace.

Timing remains unknowable. The practical concern is lifelines: water imported across the fault could be severed for months, an exposure that shapes California’s building codes and emergency water planning far more than any single quake forecast.

3. The New Madrid Zone: A Midwest Fault That Rang Boston’s Bells

Three enormous earthquakes shook the central Mississippi Valley during the winter of 1811 and 1812, ringing church bells as far away as Boston. The zone spans parts of Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, and Kentucky, with Memphis and St. Louis inside it. Because the region’s crust is older and colder, federal hazard science indicates shaking travels much farther than in California.

Most buildings there predate seismic codes. That gap between a rare hazard and a largely unprepared building stock is what makes the zone rank so high, not any expectation of a quake soon.

4. Salt Lake City: Built Directly on the Wasatch Fault

The Wasatch fault runs directly beneath Utah’s most populated corridor, where more than two million residents live along a narrow strip of valley floor. State and national earthquake hazard program estimates put the fault’s recurrence interval for large ruptures in the range of several centuries. Much of the valley also sits on soft lake sediments that amplify shaking.

Retrofitting has lagged. Unreinforced masonry remains common in older neighborhoods, and that construction type, rather than the fault itself, drives most of the projected casualty estimates for the region.

5. Tampa Bay: A Shallow Funnel Built for Storm Surge

Tampa Bay is shallow, funnel-shaped, and lined by land barely above sea level, a combination that turns moderate hurricanes into severe storm-surge events. Nearly three million people live in the metropolitan area. Federal geologic hazard updates and storm-surge modeling have long placed the bay among the most surge-vulnerable metros in the country.

Direct hits have been rare for a century, which is part of the problem. Rapid growth has filled the low ground during that quiet stretch, so the exposed population is far larger than the last major storm ever tested.

6. Miami: A Low City on Porous Limestone

Miami sits on porous limestone, so rising seawater pushes up through the ground rather than stopping at a wall. Sunny-day flooding on Miami Beach streets has become routine at king tides. Sea-level records maintained by federal earth-science programs show the regional rise accelerating, while roughly 2.7 million people live in Miami-Dade County.

Seawalls offer limited help against water arriving from below. That geology is why the county’s adaptation spending leans toward pumps, raised roads, and drainage rather than barriers, a slower and costlier path than coastal cities built on clay.

7. Tornado Alley: The Plains Breed the World’s Most Violent Twisters

Warm Gulf moisture colliding with dry air off the Rockies gives the central Plains the most violent tornadoes on the planet. Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska average dozens of confirmed tornadoes each spring. Long-term storm records and federal hazard mapping programs mark the corridor as unmatched for EF4 and EF5 events.

Activity has drifted eastward in recent decades, toward the more densely populated and more heavily forested Southeast, where warnings are harder to see coming. Housing stock there includes far more manufactured homes, which raises the death toll per storm.

8. Charleston: A Historic Fault Under the Southeast

A magnitude-7 earthquake leveled much of Charleston in 1886, killing about 60 people and damaging structures across several states. The Southeast has no obvious plate boundary, which makes the source harder to map, though government geologic hazard tracking still lists the area as an active zone. Roughly 850,000 people now live in the metro area.

Charleston also floods. The combination of seismic risk, hurricane surge, and sinking ground gives the city a multi-hazard profile that few American metros of its size have to plan around at once.

9. Anchorage: One of America’s Most Seismically Active Cities

Alaska records more earthquakes than the rest of the United States combined, and Anchorage sits near the center of that activity. A magnitude-9.2 quake in 1964 destroyed neighborhoods and triggered landslides across the city. Roughly 290,000 residents, nearly 40 percent of the state’s population, live in the area, which federal science monitoring tracks continuously.

Isolation compounds everything. Supplies arrive by port, air, and a single highway corridor, so damage to any one of them slows recovery in ways that a comparable quake in the Lower 48 would not.

10. The Big Island of Hawaii: Active Volcanoes and Constant Quakes

Kilauea and Mauna Loa both sit on the Big Island, and Kilauea has been among the world’s most active volcanoes for decades. A 2018 eruption destroyed more than 700 homes in the Puna district. Federal seismic hazard data also rank the island as one of the most earthquake-prone places in the country.

Lava-zone maps have existed for years, yet building continues in the highest-risk districts because land there is cheap and insurance is scarce. That economic pressure, not the volcano’s behavior, explains most of the property loss.

11. California’s Wildland Edge: Millions Living Where Megafires Ignite

Roughly one in three California homes stands in the wildland-urban interface, where houses meet flammable vegetation. Fires there now burn hotter and later into the year as fuels dry out. Official federal hazard records show that nearly all of the state’s largest fires by acreage have occurred since 2017.

Insurers have responded by withdrawing from entire ZIP codes, pushing homeowners into the state’s high-risk pool. The financial exposure is spreading faster than the fires themselves, and it reaches households that have never seen a flame.
