12 high-end SUVs stuck at or near the bottom of KBB’s expert ratings

Luxury badges do not guarantee a high placement when editors compare vehicles head to head. Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 lists for subcompact, compact, midsize and full-size luxury SUVs each close with a handful of familiar names. Here are twelve of them, spread across all four classes, with the rating each one earned.

1. Land Rover Range Rover Evoque: Last Place Among Subcompacts

The smallest Range Rover finishes at the very bottom of the luxury subcompact class. Kelley Blue Book’s editors gave the Evoque a 3.2 out of 5 rating, which placed it ninth of the nine vehicles on the 2026 list. The 2025 model on that list carried a starting price of $51,175.

A 3.2 is also well below the scores clustered near the top of the other luxury classes. Shoppers drawn to the Land Rover name for its compact footprint may want to test-drive the Evoque against every rival on the same list before signing anything.

2. Alfa Romeo Tonale: Eighth of Nine

Alfa Romeo’s smallest SUV sits one rung above the Evoque. The Tonale earned a 4.1 out of 5 score from Kelley Blue Book’s editors, good for eighth of nine on the 2026 luxury subcompact SUV list. That is a respectable number in isolation, yet it leaves only one competitor behind it.

The gap between the Tonale and the seventh-place finisher is small, so the ranking reflects a tight pack more than a clear failing. Buyers who prize Italian styling may still find it appealing, but the editors’ ordering suggests that most rivals in the class deliver a more complete package.

3. Acura ADX: Seventh of Nine

Acura’s newest entry in the small luxury crossover class lands in the lower third of the field. Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 luxury subcompact SUV list shows the ADX with a 4.2 out of 5 rating, which placed it seventh among nine contenders. Only the Tonale and the Evoque scored lower.

Because the ADX is a recent arrival, the ranking amounts to an early verdict from the editors rather than a long track record. Prospective owners can treat the score as a reminder that a new luxury nameplate still has to beat established small SUVs on the same list.

4. Buick Envision: Tied for Last

Buick’s compact crossover shares the bottom of a crowded class. Kelley Blue Book’s editors rated the Envision 3.9 out of 5 overall, tied for last at 20th of 21 on the 2026 luxury compact SUV list. Their verdict on the driving experience was that its cushy personality makes it a little one-sided.

The Envision did start at $42,995 on that list, a modest figure for the class. Shoppers who value a soft, quiet ride above all else may see that one-sidedness as a feature, while buyers who want sharper handling will probably look elsewhere in the class.

5. Alfa Romeo Stelvio: Sharing the Basement

Few compact luxury SUVs trade on driving character as openly as the Stelvio, yet the editors did not reward it. The Alfa Romeo posted a 3.9 out of 5 result on Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 luxury compact SUV list, matching the Buick Envision for a tie at 20th of 21.

A shared last place means two very different vehicles ended up with the same number, so the score alone does not explain why. Anyone considering a Stelvio should read the full review and weigh the editors’ view against their own test drive, since the ranking measures the whole package.

6. Infiniti QX50: Tied for 16th

Infiniti’s compact SUV lands a few places above the bottom pair but remains in the lower tier. Kelley Blue Book assigned the QX50 a 4.0 out of 5 score, tied for 16th of 21 on its 2026 luxury compact SUV list. A 0.1-point gap separates it from the two vehicles tied for last.

With 21 competitors in the class, a tie at 16th means most of the field outscored it. Shoppers comparing compact luxury models can use that as a prompt to line the QX50 up against the higher-ranked options before assuming the Infiniti badge carries the extra refinement.

7. Porsche Cayenne: Pricey and Near Last

Porsche’s family SUV is the priciest entry among the midsize names here. Kelley Blue Book listed the Cayenne with an $86,695 starting price and a 4.2 out of 5 rating, tied for last at 17th of 23 on its 2026 luxury midsize SUV list.

A 4.2 is not a poor score on its own, and the crowded midsize class compresses results into narrow gaps. Still, buyers paying a premium for the Porsche name should note that the editors placed it level with the bottom of the class rather than near the top.

8. Lincoln Nautilus: Level With the Bottom

Lincoln’s two-row crossover shares the lowest midsize ranking with the Cayenne and the Q8 on the same list. The Nautilus received a 4.2 out of 5 rating from Kelley Blue Book’s editors, tying for last at 17th of 23 in the 2026 luxury midsize SUV class.

The shared position underscores how little separates many midsize luxury SUVs. Shoppers cross-shopping the Nautilus should treat the tie as a cue to compare features, pricing and dealer incentives directly, because the editors’ numbers do not single out the Lincoln as meaningfully worse than its peers.

9. Audi Q8: A Premium Price, a Low Rank

Audi’s coupe-styled flagship SUV starts at $75,695 on Kelley Blue Book’s list, yet it finished in the bottom group. The Q8 scored a 4.2 out of 5 rating, tied for last at 17th of 23 on the 2026 luxury midsize SUV list, level with the Cayenne and the Nautilus.

The result suggests that a sloping roofline and a high sticker do not automatically translate into a higher editorial score. Buyers weighing the Q8 against less expensive midsize alternatives may find that several higher-ranked vehicles offer comparable luxury for noticeably less money.

10. Land Rover Range Rover: The Costliest Near-Last

Land Rover’s flagship carries the highest starting price of any vehicle in this set. Kelley Blue Book’s 2026 luxury full-size SUV list shows the Range Rover with a $109,375 start and a 4.0 out of 5 rating, tied for last at 12th of 13 in the class.

A six-figure price tag raises expectations, and the editors’ score suggests the Range Rover did not fully meet them against its rivals. Prospective owners should weigh its status appeal and capability against that ranking before assuming the most expensive option in the class is also the best one.

11. Infiniti QX80: Sharing Last in Full-Size

Infiniti’s three-row flagship ended up beside the Range Rover at the base of its class. Kelley Blue Book’s editors gave the QX80 a 4.0 out of 5 score, a tie for last at 12th of 13 on the 2026 luxury full-size SUV list.

The class list is short at 13 vehicles, so a tie for last still leaves the QX80 within sight of its rivals. Families that need three rows and a large cargo area can still shop the QX80, though the ranking points to stronger-rated choices for the same purpose.

12. Land Rover Defender: Rugged Looks, Middling Score

The revived Defender trades heavily on off-road image, but the editors scored it in the lower tier of its class. Kelley Blue Book rated the 2026 Defender 90 at 4.0 out of 5 points, tied for 16th of 21 on its luxury compact SUV list, alongside the Infiniti QX50.

The score applies specifically to the Defender 90 rather than to every body style Land Rover sells. Shoppers attracted to its boxy design and capability should treat the ranking as one data point and compare it with higher-rated compact luxury rivals.
