Every year, the Initial Quality Study from the research firm counts how many problems owners hit with a new vehicle, and the 2026 edition crowned winners across the market. A Porsche 911 posted the best score overall, while pickups, SUVs, sedans and minivans each produced class leaders of their own. The twelve models that follow come from six brands: Porsche, Ford, Chevrolet, Hyundai, Kia and Nissan.

1. Porsche 911: Best Overall

The Porsche 911 result is the headline of the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. The sports car is the highest-ranking model overall, at 110 problems per 100 vehicles, a figure well under the study’s industry average of 175 problems per 100.
Initial quality tallies the problems owners report with a new vehicle, so a low number points to a car that arrives with few defects. The industry average itself dropped from 192 the year before. Volkswagen AG, Porsche’s parent, holds the best-scoring model in the entire ranking, ahead of every pickup, SUV and sedan in the field.
2. Ford F-150: Big Truck, Few Flaws

Among large light-duty pickups, the Ford F-150 ranking came out highest in J.D. Power’s 2026 Initial Quality Study. The segment is one of the most heavily contested in the American market, so a first-place finish carries weight.
Initial quality measures early problems rather than long-term durability, which means the result speaks to how cleanly a truck leaves the factory. The F-150 shares the winner’s circle with another Ford pickup on this list, a sign that the brand’s full-size truck lineup posted strong scores across the board.
3. Ford Super Duty: Heavy-Duty Winner

In the large heavy-duty truck category, the Super Duty award finished as the highest-ranked entry for initial quality. These trucks are bought for towing and hauling work, where downtime from early defects costs owners real money.
The award complements the F-150 result in the light-duty class, giving Ford top marks in two separate pickup segments of the 2026 study. Heavy-duty buyers often weigh capability first, but a strong initial quality showing suggests the added complexity of these trucks did not come at the expense of a clean start.
4. Hyundai Santa Cruz: Midsize Truck Winner

The Santa Cruz result was the highest-ranked midsize truck in the 2026 study, finishing ahead of the Honda Ridgeline and the Ford Maverick. Both named rivals are well-regarded smaller pickups, which makes the comparison a close one.
Winning a segment with such direct rivals means the Hyundai posted the fewest early problems among trucks aimed at buyers who want a pickup bed in a more manageable package. The result is one of several class wins for Hyundai Motor Group in the study, which the company detailed in its own announcement.
5. Ford Mustang: Pony Car Perfection

The Mustang segment win ranked at the top of the sporty car segment in the 2026 study. A nameplate with decades of history, it beat the rest of a category built around performance and style rather than everyday practicality.
Sporty cars tend to be the most complex vehicles in a lineup, with specialized hardware and technology, which makes a segment win on initial quality notable. The result is part of a broader showing in which Ford and General Motors icons took first place in several segments of the 2026 ranking.
6. Chevrolet Tahoe: Shared Large-SUV Crown

The Tahoe and Sequoia tie topped the large SUV segment in a tie with the Toyota Sequoia. Neither full-size sport utility edged the other in the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study.
A tie at the top of a class shows how tightly the leading vehicles were bunched. The Tahoe is among the General Motors icons that won their segments this year, and sharing the title with a Toyota rival underlines that two very different automakers delivered similarly clean results in the big-SUV class.
7. Chevrolet Blazer: Midsize SUV Standout

The Blazer midsize ranking ranked highest among midsize SUVs for initial quality in 2026. It now holds a segment crown in one of the busiest classes in the market.
Midsize SUVs draw heavy shopper traffic and fierce competition, so leading the category on early quality is a meaningful result for General Motors. Together with the Tahoe, the Blazer gives the automaker two SUV segment wins in the same study, spread across different size classes.
8. Hyundai Sonata: Midsize Sedan Surprise

The Sonata segment award topped the midsize car segment in the 2026 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study. The category is a crowded one, and the Hyundai still came out on top.
Hyundai Motor Group announced five segment awards in the study, and the Sonata is one of them. For shoppers who still prefer a traditional sedan, the finish points to a car that delivers a trouble-free start, and it gives the midsize sedan class a clear leader in the 2026 ranking.
9. Hyundai Venue: Small SUV, Big Result

The Venue small SUV win topped the small SUV segment in the 2026 study. It is among the smaller and more affordable vehicles in the Hyundai lineup, which makes a class win notable for the model.
Entry-level vehicles are not always the ones that post the cleanest launch, so winning on initial quality says the Venue avoided the early glitches that can dog budget-oriented models. It is one of five segment awards Hyundai Motor Group claimed in the study, according to the company’s announcement.
10. Kia Carnival: Minivan Family Favorite

The Carnival minivan ranking ranked highest among minivans in the 2026 study. Family haulers face demanding owners who rely on sliding doors, seating and electronics every day, so early problems show up quickly.
Taking the minivan crown places the Kia among the segment-winning vehicles from Hyundai Motor Group this year. Buyers who pick the Carnival for its space and versatility get the added assurance of a class-leading initial quality result in the 2026 ranking.
11. Kia K4: Compact Car Leader

The Kia K4 award led the compact car segment in the 2026 study. The sedan beat the rest of a crowded field of small, affordable cars.
Compact cars are often the first new vehicle a buyer purchases, and a clean start matters a great deal for that kind of customer. The K4 result adds another class win for the Kia brand within the group of segment awards Hyundai Motor Group announced for the 2026 study.
12. Nissan Rogue: A First for Rogue

The Rogue compact SUV ranking earned the highest initial quality rating in the compact SUV segment, a first for the model. The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V did not finish among the top-ranked in the class.
Compact SUVs are the biggest battleground in the American market, and the RAV4 and CR-V are perennial sales leaders. A first-time win for the Rogue shows that sales volume and early quality are separate measures, and that a rival can outscore the best sellers on the second one.
