12 GM models recalled in 2026, as 276,879 Malibus risk a blank backup camera

General Motors filed a long run of safety recalls during 2026, and they reach well beyond one sedan. The campaigns touch cameras, steering, transmissions, windows and air bags across Chevrolet, GMC, Buick and Cadillac. Here are twelve GM models with an open 2026 recall that owners and used-car shoppers should check by VIN.

1. Chevrolet Malibu: Blank Screen, Big Number

Recall 26V212000, filed April 2, 2026, covers 276,879 Malibus from the 2023-2025 model years. NHTSA-based records quote the defect plainly: the rearview camera screen may display a distorted or blank image. That makes it the largest campaign on the General Motors 2026 list by a wide margin, and the one with the most direct effect on reversing safely.

Owners of a 2023-2025 sedan should enter the VIN on NHTSA’s lookup page and confirm the status. Until the repair is done, mirrors and a glance over the shoulder have to replace the camera, since a blank display gives no warning of what sits behind the bumper.

2. Chevrolet Corvette: Turn Signal Trouble

Recall 26V213000 from April 2, 2026, covers 32,988 Corvettes, among them the 2026 ZR1X and E-Ray. The defect sits in the exterior turn-signal lighting, the part that tells other drivers a lane change or turn is coming. It is a rare case where the recall reaches the newest high-performance trims rather than only aging stock.

Anyone driving or buying a recent Corvette should run the VIN before a track day or a long trip. Because the problem concerns signaling rather than power, the car may feel normal while still failing to warn traffic of its intentions.

3. Chevrolet Express: Loose Steering Nut

Recall 26V399000, dated June 23, 2026, covers 26,541 Express and Savana vans from the 2025-2026 model years. The stated cause is that the steering gear assembly may have a nut that was not properly tightened. A nut that works loose in a steering gear is the kind of fault that can show up as vague handling long before anything fails outright.

Fleet managers who run these full-size vans for delivery or shuttle work should check every unit by VIN rather than assuming one lot is clean. Any van showing play or odd steering feel belongs in a dealer bay promptly, ahead of the next route.

4. GMC Savana: Two Recalls, One Van

The same 26,541-van recall that hits the Express also covers its GMC twin, the Savana, for the steering-gear nut problem. A separate campaign adds 857 Savana cutaway vans, flagged for tires with sidewall damage. Because the two models share a platform and a build line, a defect in one nameplate usually follows the other.

Buyers of used cutaway or passenger Savanas should ask for both recall histories, since a single clean lookup can miss the second campaign. Operators with mixed fleets of Chevrolet and GMC vans need to search both brands, not just one.

5. Chevrolet Tahoe: Rear Wheels Can Lock

NHTSA recall 26V085000, filed February 13, 2026, covers 43,743 full-size GM SUVs from the 2022 model year, with the Tahoe among them. The agency says the transmission control valve may fail and lock up the rear wheels. A sudden rear lock-up at speed can upset the vehicle’s stability, which is why the filing treats the defect as a crash risk.

Owners of a 2022 Tahoe should confirm their VIN is included and book the free software fix. Families who use the SUV for towing or highway commutes have the most reason to act early, since lock-ups matter most at higher speeds.

6. Chevrolet Suburban: Same Recall, Longer Wheelbase

The 43,743-vehicle recall also reaches 2022 Suburbans, the extended sibling of the Tahoe. The rear-wheel lock-up risk comes from the transmission control valve, and dealers will install new transmission control module software at no charge. The remedy is a software update rather than a parts swap, which keeps the visit relatively short for most owners.

Suburban owners hauling kids or cargo should not wait for a symptom, because the first sign of a failed valve could be a lock-up on the road. The fix costs nothing, so the only price is a morning at the dealership.

7. GMC Yukon: Rear Lock-Up Risk

Recall 26V085000 takes in 2022 Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs alongside the Chevrolet twins. NHTSA states the hazard directly: rear wheels that lock up while driving increase the risk of a crash. The wording is notable because it ties a transmission valve fault straight to a loss of control, not merely to a drivability complaint.

GMC owners who bought used should verify the open status by VIN, since a prior owner may never have received the notice. Treat the free dealer software update as a safety item rather than routine maintenance, and schedule it soon.

8. Cadillac Escalade: Luxury Badge, Same Valve

The same transmission-valve recall covers 2022 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV models. Owner letters went out April 7, 2026, so a notice may already be sitting in the mail. The Escalade shares its underpinnings with the Tahoe and Yukon, which explains why the flagship appears on an otherwise mainstream list.

A high price tag does not exempt the Escalade from the lock-up risk, and used-car shoppers should confirm the repair was completed before buying. Anyone who never saw the April letter can check the VIN directly with NHTSA or a dealer.

9. Buick Regal: Fracture-Prone Toe Links

A February 26, 2026 recall covers 17,050 Buick Regals from 2012-2013. The cause is that the cars may have been built with rear toe links that lack proper electrocoating, so the links may fracture. Without that protective coating, corrosion can weaken the suspension part over time, which is why a recall for cars this old still turned up.

Owners of these older sedans should check the VIN, particularly if the car has lived in a region that salts its roads. A fractured rear link affects how the wheel holds its alignment, so any clunk or odd tire wear deserves an inspection.

10. Cadillac Lyriq: Tiny Count, Real Fault

Motor1’s GM recall list records a February 12, 2026 recall of 22 Cadillac Lyriq EVs from the 2024 model year because the rearview camera may fail. The count is small, which suggests a narrow production issue rather than a broad design flaw. Even so, a failed camera removes a legally required view when backing up.

Only a handful of owners are involved, so most Lyriq drivers can relax, but a VIN check takes less than a minute. Anyone who has already seen a dead or frozen camera feed should ask the dealer whether the car belongs to this group.

11. Cadillac Optiq: Windows That Might Not Reverse

NHTSA recall 26V612000, dated September 24, 2026, covers 29,347 Cadillac Optiqs from the 2025-2027 model years. Key-fob express-up windows may not reverse on an obstruction, which fails Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 118. That standard exists to stop power windows from trapping fingers, hands or small children.

Parents and pet owners should avoid raising windows with the fob until the repair is done, and should watch that nothing is in the opening during any one-touch close. The recall is recent, so notices and parts may still be rolling out.

12. Chevrolet Silverado 1500: Roof-Rail Air Bag Debris

NHTSA recall 26V611000, filed September 24, 2026, covers 1,559 older GM pickups, including 2016-2017 Silverado 1500s. The roof-rail air bag inflator end cap may detach and project debris into the cabin. Because the part sits in the very system meant to protect occupants in a rollover or side impact, the failure turns a safety device into a hazard.

Owners of these decade-old trucks are the likeliest to have missed a notice after a move or a sale. A VIN check will settle it, and the repair should be done before the truck carries passengers again.
