10 cars that left the showroom able to top 200 mph

Automakers have chased 200 mph for decades, but only a small handful of production cars have actually left dealer lots capable of reaching it under their own power. Some needed a closed runway and a factory driver to prove it; others simply had the numbers to back up the claim from day one. Here are ten cars that rolled out of the showroom already built to top 200 mph.

1. McLaren F1: The Naturally Aspirated Record

The McLaren F1 left the factory with a naturally aspirated BMW V12 rated at 618 horsepower and no turbo lag to complicate a flat-out run. In 1998, four years after Autocar road-tested a production example, works driver Andy Wallace took a lightly modified F1 to Volkswagen’s Ehra-Lessien straight and set a 1998 world speed record of 243 mph, a figure no naturally aspirated road car has matched since.

Only 64 other production examples of the three-seat coupe were ever assembled, and each one already commanded seven-figure prices among collectors before the record run made it a benchmark for every hypercar that followed. Its central driving position remains unique among the cars on this list.

2. Bugatti Veyron 16.4: The Key-Locked Top Speed

Bugatti’s quad-turbocharged, 8.0-liter W16 made 987 horsepower in the original Veyron 16.4, enough for German technical inspectors to certify an average two-way run of 408.47 km/h, 253.81 mph, at Ehra-Lessien in a TÜV-certified 2005 run. A separate top-speed key had to be turned to lower the body and adjust the wing before the car would allow that kind of speed.

Ten specially rated tires, good for roughly 15 minutes before they had to be swapped, underscored how close the Veyron ran to the edge of what a production tire could survive at the time. Bugatti built fewer than 450 examples across the entire Veyron line.

3. Bugatti Chiron Super Sport 300+: Past 300 Mph, Then Sold

Andy Wallace, the same driver who had set the McLaren F1’s record two decades earlier, guided a modified Chiron prototype to a 304.773-mph record run at Ehra-Lessien in 2019, the first production-based car verified past 300 mph. Bugatti then built 30 road-legal Super Sport 300+ examples carrying the same elongated body and a 1,578-horsepower quad-turbo W16.

Each customer car ships electronically limited to 273 mph, since the record-spec gearing and aerodynamics were validated for one controlled run rather than everyday ownership. Buyers still receive a plaque referencing the exact record speed their car is built to.

4. Koenigsegg Agera RS: Fastest On A Public Road

Koenigsegg closed an 11-mile stretch of Nevada State Route 160 between Las Vegas and Pahrump in November 2017 and sent an Agera RS down it twice, averaging a 277.9-mph public-road average and topping out at 284.55 mph on the second pass. That made it the fastest verified production car ever recorded on an open public road.

The twin-turbo 5.0-liter V8 behind both runs made 1,160 horsepower on E85 fuel, with a carbon-fiber body tuned to stay planted at speeds where lift becomes dangerous. Koenigsegg built only 25 examples of the Agera RS.

5. SSC Tuatara: The Disputed Record Chase

SSC North America ran its Tuatara at the Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds, a runway at Kennedy Space Center, and logged a one-way pass of 295-mph verified pass using two independent Racelogic VBOX satellite units, after an earlier attempt’s video evidence was disputed by outside analysts. That earlier two-way average of 282.9 mph, set in October 2020, still stands as the recognized production-car record.

The twin-turbo 5.9-liter V8 behind both runs makes up to 1,750 horsepower on E85, mounted in a carbon-fiber chassis built in Washington state. The disputed run became a cautionary tale for how top-speed claims get independently verified.

6. Hennessey Venom GT: One-Way Record On A Runway

Hennessey based the Venom GT on a Lotus Exige chassis, stretched and reinforced to carry a twin-turbo 7.0-liter V8 making more than 1,200 horsepower. Driver Brian Smith reached a 270.49-mph landing-strip run on the Kennedy Space Center’s 3.22-mile shuttle strip, using only 2.3 miles of runway to get there.

Because record bodies require a two-way average and Hennessey never ran the return pass, the Venom GT’s speed stands as a one-way mark rather than an official world record. Hennessey built fewer than 30 examples before ending Venom GT production.

7. Jaguar XJ220: Fastest Production Car Of Its Day

Former Formula 1 driver Martin Brundle took a modified Jaguar XJ220, its catalytic converters removed and rev limiter raised to 7,900 rpm, around the Nardo test track in Italy and recorded a 217-mph Nardo run, the fastest production car in the world at the time. The unmodified road version, limited well below that rpm, still topped out around 212 mph.

Power came from a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 rather than the V12 shown in the original concept, a switch that disappointed some early depositors enough to walk away from their orders. Jaguar built 281 examples between 1992 and 1994.

8. Ford GT: A Small Engine, A Big Number

MotorTrend clocked the 2017 Ford GT’s electronically limited top speed at a 216-mph MotorTrend test result, drawing on a twin-turbo 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 rated at 647 horsepower, a comparatively small engine for a car in this company. Ford built the carbon-fiber-bodied supercar largely to homologate its GT race program, which won its class at Le Mans in 2016.

Active aerodynamics, including a rear wing that adjusts automatically for drag or downforce, let the GT hold that speed without the wide splitters and canards common to the rest of this list. Ford capped production at roughly 1,350 units across the model’s run.

9. Rimac Nevera: Electric Power, Hypercar Speed

Rimac’s Nevera uses four electric motors, one per wheel, to produce a combined 1,914 horsepower and a 258-mph factory claim, 412 km/h, a figure the Croatian manufacturer backs with a factory-run 0-300 km/h time of 9.22 seconds. That acceleration figure beat every internal-combustion hypercar on record when Rimac set it in 2021.

A 120-kWh battery pack sits low in the chassis, giving the Nevera a curb weight north of 4,700 pounds, nearly double some of the lighter combustion-engine cars on this list. Rimac limits production to 150 units.

10. Ferrari F40: Enzo’s Final Approval

Ferrari built the F40 in 1987 to mark the company’s 40th anniversary, fitting a 2,936 cc twin-turbocharged V8 rated at 351.5 kW, about 471 horsepower, at 7,000 rpm. The factory’s own figures list a 201-mph factory figure, 324 km/h, making it the last Ferrari road car personally approved by Enzo Ferrari before his death in 1988.

The F40 had no power steering, no ABS, and body panels so thin that early owners reported the doors flexing in strong crosswinds at high speed. Ferrari built 1,311 examples, more than triple its original planned run of around 400.
