Automakers rarely gamble on an unconventional engine layout, since a rotary, a flat-twelve, or a rear-mounted air-cooled V8 multiplies engineering and service costs compared with a normal front-mounted design. A handful of manufacturers built that gamble into showroom cars anyway, chasing smoothness, packaging, or raw theater a conventional layout could not deliver. Here are ten production cars whose engines took the road almost nobody else dared.
1. Mazda RX-8: Rotary’s Last Stand

Mazda’s RX-8 arrived in April 2003 as the last showroom car built around a two-rotor Wankel engine, using rear-hinged half-doors to give four adults real access without a center pillar. Mazda’s own closeout announcement marked the SPIRIT R edition as the line’s end in March 2012, by which point the company had built 192,094 examples worldwide.
The RENESIS engine revved past 9,000 rpm and weighed little more than a case of bottled water, but rotary ownership means watching oil consumption and budgeting for apex seals well before 100,000 miles. No automaker has sold a rotary-powered car since it left production.
2. Ferrari Testarossa: Flat-Twelve Icon

Ferrari unveiled the Testarossa at the Paris Motor Show in October 1984, wrapping a flat-twelve boxer engine in the widest production Ferrari body built to that point, its side strakes feeding air to rear-mounted radiators. Ferrari’s own model history credits new four-valve-per-cylinder heads with making it the most powerful production sports car engine of its moment.
The flat-twelve’s low center of gravity gave the Testarossa a planted feel its Lamborghini Countach rival never quite matched, though the horizontally opposed layout demanded a wider engine bay and service bills to match. Collector values have climbed steadily as buyers rediscovered the shape.
3. Cadillac V-16: Sixteen Cylinders, Depression Era

Cadillac introduced the world’s first production V-16 in 1930 with the Series 452, a smooth-running 452-cubic-inch engine built to outclass every straight-eight on the market. Hagerty’s history of the engine puts first-year sales at 2,500 cars, a number the Great Depression would never let Cadillac repeat.
Sales fell to 750 in 1931 and 300 in 1932, and by 1935 Cadillac was hand-building barely 49 V-16s a year for buyers who wanted the badge more than the horsepower. The engine survived on reputation alone until production finally ended in 1940.
4. Saab 96: Two-Stroke Holdout

Saab launched the 96 in 1960 with an 841cc three-cylinder two-stroke engine, a design that needed oil mixed into the fuel and left a distinctive blue haze trailing behind at idle. Its production history shows it was the last mass-market European car sold new with a two-stroke, before Saab swapped in a Ford V4 in 1967.
The two-stroke’s simplicity made it nearly impossible to stall and cheap to rebuild, but the fuel-oil mix meant drivers without pre-mixed pumps nearby had to measure oil by hand at every fill-up. Rally teams kept racing two-stroke Saabs well after the factory moved on.
5. Tatra T700: Czech Engineering’s Farewell

Tatra built the T700 in 1996 as a final flagship, mounting an air-cooled, fuel-injected 4.3-litre DOHC V8 at the rear and sending power to the rear wheels through a design lineage stretching back to the 1930s. The Lane Motor Museum’s record of the car lists a top speed over 100 mph from that rear-mounted engine.
Rear-engine, air-cooled V8 sedans had vanished from Western Europe decades earlier, but Tatra kept building them for Czech state officials right through the end of the Communist era. Fewer than a handful of T700s survive outside museum collections today.
6. Chevrolet Corvair: Detroit’s Air-Cooled Outlier

Chevrolet built the Corvair across two body generations from the 1960 through 1969 model years, powering it with the only rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-six General Motors ever put into mass production. Its production record shows the layout never returned to an American showroom after the line ended.
The rear-engine layout gave the Corvair flat, uncluttered packaging its front-engine rivals could not match, but early swing-axle suspension drew safety criticism that dogged the car’s reputation for years. GM revised the rear suspension for the second generation, too late to save the name.
7. Bugatti Veyron 16.4: Two V8s, One Crankcase

Bugatti built the Veyron 16.4 around an 8.0-litre quad-turbocharged W16, effectively two narrow-angle V8s bolted together and sharing 64 valves across four camshafts. Independent certification from TUV Sud confirmed 1,001 PS and 1,250 Nm of torque from the layout.
Cooling that many cylinders and turbos needed ten separate radiators scattered around the body, and the added mechanical complexity made routine service runs stretch into five figures. No other manufacturer has since sold a production W16 engine to the public, leaving the Veyron’s layout a one-off.
8. Volkswagen Corrado VR6: Fifteen Degrees Apart

Volkswagen split the difference between a V6 and a straight-six in the Corrado VR6, angling the cylinder banks just 15 degrees apart under a single cylinder head to keep the engine bay narrow. Spec figures list 2.8 litres and 178 hp for the US version against 2,861cc and 190 PS in Europe.
The narrow-angle layout let Volkswagen fit six cylinders into an engine bay designed for a four, a trick the company later scaled up into its W8 and W12 engines. The Corrado’s chassis and brakes were upgraded specifically to carry the extra weight up front.
9. Mercedes-Benz 300 SD Turbodiesel: First Turbodiesel Passenger Car

Mercedes-Benz introduced the 300 SD Turbodiesel in the US and Canada in 1978 as the world’s first passenger car sold with a turbocharged diesel engine, a 3.0-litre inline-five developed from the C111 record cars. The W116 platform’s history credits the turbodiesel with restoring performance the emissions-era gasoline engines had lost.
The turbocharger made up for a naturally aspirated diesel’s weak low-end power without sacrificing the fuel economy American buyers wanted after the decade’s gas shortages. Mercedes sold the 300 SD only in North America, reading that market correctly.
10. Dodge Ram SRT-10: A Pickup With a Viper’s Heart

Dodge built the Ram SRT-10 around the Viper’s 8.3-litre V10, rating the truck at 500 bhp at 5,600 rpm and 525 lb-ft of torque in a regular-cab pickup body. Performance figures put the regular-cab version at 154 mph and 0-60 mph in 4.9 seconds.
Dropping a supercar engine into a full-size pickup meant reinforced frame rails and a six-speed manual borrowed straight from the Viper’s own parts bin. The stunt made the SRT-10 the fastest production pickup sold at the time.
