8 pickups with the highest payload rating, one cleared for 8,000 pounds

Payload is the rating that gets ignored until a load of gravel or a pallet of pavers pushes a pickup past its limit. The spread across current trucks is enormous, from about 2,200 pounds on an electric stainless-steel wedge to four tons on a heavy-duty dually. Here are eight pickups ranked by the highest payload rating each can claim.

1. Ford F-250 Super Duty: Heavy-Duty King

The top rating on the list belongs to the Super Duty. Kelley Blue Book puts the 2026 F-250 at a maximum payload capacity of 8,000 pounds with the 6.8-liter engine, a figure that sits well past anything a half-ton can legally haul.

That number is a ceiling, not a default. Cab, bed length, axle and engine all move the rating, so a particular truck’s door-jamb sticker is the figure that counts. The Regular Cab comes only with an 8-foot bed, the long-wheelbase layout that suits work-truck loads. Even so, 8,000 pounds is four times what the lightest trucks on this list can carry.

2. Ram 3500: Gas Beats Diesel

The 2026 Ram 3500 is quoted at a maximum payload of 7,590 pounds with the gasoline HEMI, according to a fleet vehicle guide. The 6.7-liter Cummins diesel version of the truck drops to 6,050 pounds.

The gap runs against intuition, since the diesel is the engine known for torque and towing. A heavier engine takes its weight out of the bed’s allowance, so the lighter gas engine leaves more room for cargo. Buyers hauling heavy loads rather than trailers may come out ahead with the gasoline option, though towing needs point the other way.

3. GMC Sierra 3500 HD: Dually Payload Leader

GM’s 2026 Sierra 3500 HD payload table peaks at 7,290 pounds, and as GM Authority reports, the strongest rating belongs to the Regular Cab Long Bed DRW 2WD model with the gas engine.

The Duramax version of that same configuration is rated 6,584 pounds, so the diesel again gives up several hundred pounds. Dual rear wheels and a regular cab are what unlock the top number. Other cab, bed and drive combinations in the same table land lower, which makes the exact configuration matter far more than the badge. The 7,290-pound figure is therefore a best case, not a typical truck.

4. GMC Sierra 2500 HD: Three-Quarter Ton

The 2026 Sierra 2500 HD tops out at 4,049 pounds of payload in Regular Cab Long Bed 2WD gas form on 18- or 20-inch wheels, per GM payload tables. The Duramax version of the same truck drops to 3,811 pounds.

That is roughly half what the 3500 HD manages, which shows how much the dual-rear-wheel axle adds. For owners who regularly carry a slide-in camper or a skid of material, the 2500 sits in the middle: far more capable than a half-ton, but without the dually’s added width. Diesel again costs a few hundred pounds of payload.

5. Ram 2500: Mid-Tier Ram

The 2026 Ram 2500 is listed at a maximum payload of 3,930 pounds with the HEMI, and 3,600 pounds with the 6.7-liter Cummins, based on the same 2026 fleet guide that ranks the Ram 3500.

As with its bigger sibling, the gasoline engine wins on payload. The 2500 trails the Sierra 2500 HD’s best figure by a modest margin, so the two are close rivals for work that needs more than a half-ton. Both stay far below the 3500 class, so heavy flatbed or camper duty calls for the step up to a one-ton truck.

6. Ford F-150: Best Half-Ton

The country’s best-selling truck is also the strongest half-ton in this comparison. The 2026 Ford F-150 has a maximum payload of 2,440 pounds, according to the fleet specifications guide.

That rating applies only to one configuration, so a truck as commonly equipped will carry less. Check the door-jamb sticker before loading. A half-ton F-150 tops out near 2,400 pounds, while the Super Duty line is a different truck entirely, rated in the thousands of pounds more. Mixing the two up is the classic overloading mistake. Payload ratings are also specific to the model generation, so an older F-150 cannot be judged by this number.

7. Rivian R1T: Electric Hauler

The electric 2026 Rivian R1T AWD Adventure Dual Motor is rated at 2,317 pounds of max payload, the highest of the five R1T trims listed on iSeeCars specifications. The figure trails only the F-150 among the light-duty trucks here.

Battery weight cuts into carrying capacity, yet the R1T still lands close to the best conventional half-ton on this list. The rating applies to that dual-motor trim only, so the other four trims carry somewhat less. For weekend loads of lumber, bikes or camping gear, the number is more than adequate, though a pallet of pavers is a different story.

8. Tesla Cybertruck: Stainless Outlier

The 2026 Tesla Cybertruck AWD Premium is listed at 2,200 pounds of max payload on iSeeCars data, with the other versions at about 2,000 pounds. That is the lowest rating on this list.

The angular stainless-steel body and large battery are heavy, and that weight leaves less room for cargo. The AWD Premium rating is the best the lineup offers, so most versions of the truck sit at about 2,000 pounds. A loaded bed can reach that limit quickly, and buyers with heavy loads in mind will find the Super Duty class far better suited.
